VARIOUS SPECIALIZATIONS FOR EVERYONE WHO LOVES TECHNOLOGY
VARIOUS specializations for everyone who loves technology
As Data Center Professional (DCP) you get access to a wide range of employers, that operate in the areas of designing, building or managing the data center. Roughly, we can identify the following areas of interest:
Facility engineering
Facility Engineering means taking care of all highly advanced mechanical and electrical systems in the data center. This includes power supply and distribution systems, emergency generators, HVAC and fire safety equipment. By means of inspection rounds and by monitoring the Building Management System, you detect and solve malfunctions. As engineer you get to work with the latest technical innovations and technologies.
IT Technics
Connectivity is key for a data center. As DCP you are responsible for safeguarding its data-infrastructures, including fiber- and coppernetworks, IT-hardware and network equipment. You install, maintain and monitor (customer) equipment, and support in case of malfunctions. Often you are the “remote hands” of the customer, being able to reboot or reset customers’ servers on a distance. In case of incidents or escalation, you analyze the situation and act calmly and accordingly to solve the problem.
Security
As DCP you have an important role as the eyes and ears of the data center premise. You detect potential threats and risks and take action in case of suspicious events and escalations. In some cases, you are the first point of contact for visitors. It is important that you help identify, authenticate and grant access to suppliers and visitors.
Fire Safety
A data center is designed to protect its people, equipment and (customer) data from the dangers of fire. Traditional fire-fighting systems such as water and extinguishing foam, can potentially do the data center more damage than good, as it will damage its equipment and (customer) hardware. Therefore, special extinguishing gases are preferred. As DCP you understand the systems and procedures, protecting both the people and equipment in the data center.
Project Management
Being a DCP often involves project management at some point in your data center career. This means being responsible for the entire life cycle of a variety of projects, including upgrades, construction, customer projects and internal changes. Often, sustainability plays a key theme in these projects, as this is high on the agenda of data centers.
